What to Expect

How to Prepare

Please bring with you a list of your current medications. This includes prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, vitamin or mineral supplements and herbal remedies.

You may eat a normal diet and take your medications as prescribed by your doctor.

Shampoo and dry your hair before the appointment. Do not apply gels, hair spray, oils etc. to your hair. Braids of your own hair are allowed, but weaves and extensions MUST be removed.

Bring a companion for this appointment.

Checking In

When you arrive at the Neurophysiology Lab, check in at the reception desk. Please have the following ready:

  • Health card (OHIP card). If you do not have an OHIP card, please bring another form of government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license, passport, or other provincial health card). Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment.
  • Your name, address and birth date

During and After the EEG

About 25-30 small discs are placed on your scalp using special glue prior to the test. You will be sent home with a small mobile recording unit over the next 2 or 3 days.

Wear comfortable clothing with a front button/zipper (NO pullovers).

You may eat a normal diet and take your medications as prescribed by your doctor. You will have to change the batteries in the recording unit each day and keep a diary of any episode that you have.

You will be instructed on when to return for the removal of the discs.

When the test is complete, most of the glue will be removed. Please bring your own comb or brush as these are not provided. Many patients like to wear a hat to go home. Shampoo your hair when you get home.
