Your Procedure

How to Prepare

Please bring with you a list of your current medications. This includes prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, vitamin or mineral supplements and herbal remedies.

You may eat a normal diet and take your medications as prescribed by your doctor.

Shampoo and dry your hair before the appointment. Do not apply gels, hair spray, oils etc. to your skin. Braids of your own hair are allowed, but weaves and extensions MUST be removed.

Checking In

When you arrive at the Evoked Potential (EP) Testing, check in at the reception desk. Please have the following ready:

  • Health card (OHIP card). If you do not have an OHIP card, please bring another form of government-issued photo ID (such as a driver's license, passport or other provincial health card). Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment.
  • Your name, address and birth date

Before the Evoked Potentials (EP)

You may wear shorts or underwear but you will be asked to put on a hospital gown.

During and After the EP

Approximately 3 to 8 small discs are placed on your scalp using cream.

When the test is complete, most of the cream will be removed with warm water. You may wish to wash your hair later. Please bring your own comb or brush as these are not provided.

How Long Will Your Appointment Be?

Each type of EP takes up to 45 minutes. Depending on the test requested, you may be in the room for up to 3 hours.
