Arthritis and autoimmune illnesses comprise some of the most important
health problems today. With nearly 4 million Canadians suffering from
rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, lupus, or one of the other 110
forms of arthritis, the cost to our healthcare system is staggering.
And the cost in quality of life for arthritis patients - and their families
- cannot be overestimated. Our researchers have determined to change
this bleak picture. They have a real chance to succeed - with your help.
Canada's two most
prestigious arthritis research facilities
- the Arthritis Centre for Excellence at Toronto Western Hospital and
The Wellesley Hospital's Arthritis & Autoimmune Research Centre
- have merged to form the Wellesley Toronto Arthritis & Immune Disorder
Research Centre at University Health Network. The Centre is home to
over 30 principal investigators whose expertise span the spectrum -
from molecular biology, to experimental therapeutics, to community-based
prevention.
There is reason
for optimism. Our Division of Advanced Therapeutics has introduced the
first biological therapy into Canada with remarkable success. Our molecular
biologists have discovered a new gene that is at the heart of inflammatory
response in arthritis. Our storehouse of patient information is being
mined constantly for revealing factors that can be used to improve treatment
and outcomes.
Most importantly,
our researchers are backed by a foundation that can make the difference:
the Arthritis & Autoimmunity Research Centre Foundation. The Directors
of the Foundation are dedicated to providing the fuel that runs the
research engine - dollars for salaries, equipment and facilities. Upon
this base of support, our researchers compete for grants and contracts,
and raise an additional $3 for every $1 provided by the Foundation.
That's teamwork! And that is why, with your help, our team is going
to make the difference.
