The faculty of 17 rheumatologists, through general and specialty clinics, provide diagnoses and multidisciplinary management of the following disorders:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
  • Psoriatic Arthritis
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis
  • Sjogren's Syndrome
  • Vasculitis
  • Polymyositis

  • Regional pain disorders

The Division had 14,500 outpatient visits in the year 2000. The rheumatology inpatient clinic, located at Toronto Western Hospital, is the only one of its kind in Canada. It provides multidisciplinary care to patients with complex and often life-threatening rheumatic diseases.

UHN's Orthopaedic Surgery Division consists of 12 surgeons who provide care for patients with complex musculoskeletal disorders from across the province. Last year the Division had 26,500 outpatient visits. Main areas of expertise are:

  • Joint arthroplasty (joint replacement)
  • Sports Medicine
  • General fracture management

Last year, orthopaedic surgeons at Toronto Western performed over 600 joint replacement procedures. The Sports Medicine group performed over 1,000 arthroscopic reconstructive procedures last year; their clients included Toronto's professional sports teams and the National Ballet of Canada.

The Hand Program is a multidisciplinary team of 4 surgeons working with a designated team of physiotherapists and occupational therapists to treat patients with complex hand and upper extremity problems. These include arthritis, nerve injuries, trauma and work-related injuries. The Program is the upper extremity replant center for the province of Ontario, and last year experienced 23,000 outpatient visits. It is also the only site for the University of Toronto Hand Surgery Training program, and attracts postgraduate trainees from across North America.
