Can you remember the polio epidemic a half-century ago? Did you once think that organ transplants were "science fiction" and would never happen? What about the days when a cancer diagnosis meant certain, premature death?

Nowadays, we take the polio vaccine, heart and kidney transplants, and recovery from many types of cancer for granted.

How thankful we all are for medical research, and for the men and women who dedicate their lives to finding better treatments and long-sought cures.

For our patients with arthritis and autoimmune disorders, medical research provides both a lifeline and a source of hope. New therapeutic drugs and advanced surgical interventions can provide relief and restore functional movement in many patients with arthritis -- but usually not before the disease has done some permanent damage.

This is why our researchers are intent on discovering:

• more effective, long-lasting treatments
• the underlying cause (or causes) of these illnesses; and finally,
• the means of preventing them and an eventual cure.
