This morning, Mr. Philip Orsino, Chair of the UHN Board of Trustees and I had the pleasure of announcing that the Peter Munk Charitable Foundation is donating a $37-million donation to the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre (PMCC) - the largest single gift ever made to a Canadian hospital.

As many already know, the PMCC was created almost ten years ago through the vision and generosity of Peter and Melanie Munk. Together with earlier donations to the Centre, Mr. Munk's support of PMCC totals $45-million, which is an incredible commitment to improving patient care at our hospital.

Each year, close to 17,000 patients from around the world come here for extraordinary and innovative patient-centred care from the PMCC's renowned multidisciplinary team of doctors, surgeons, nurses, allied health professionals.

This extraordinary donation will fund a new cardiovascular program and facility that will revolutionize diagnosis and treatment, and will include the purchase of state-of-the-art imaging equipment, some of which is not available anywhere else in North America.

As we look ahead, we can anticipate an exciting future for the PMCC as a world leader in its field. With new opportunities for research and patient care, the Centre will serve as a magnet to attract and retain the finest clinicians and researchers from everywhere on the globe.

Our announcement today was a chance to offer our warmest thanks to Peter and Melanie Munk. It was also a chance for us to thank everyone in the PMCC program who has, through their efforts, contributed to an outstanding centre that is worthy of such a significant investment.
