What is Pathology?
Pathology is the study of tissues and cells by medical doctors. Any time a patient has a procedure that involves taking a sample of tissue or cellular material, that sample must be evaluated to determine what, if anything may be different from normal. For treatment to be effective it must be correct for the condition the patient has: Pathology provides the answer!
Who are we?
The UHN/LMP Department of Pathology is one of Canada's largest and most experienced pathology teams. We are fully accredited by the highest international accrediting bodies and are comprised of 200 medical, scientific and technical staff serving the pathology needs of all UHN patients.
We offer consulting expertise in the areas of oncology, transplant, cardiovascular and neuroscience diagnostics. Our pathologists are subspecialized in areas including cytopathology, breast pathology, cardiovascular pathology, dermatopathology, gynecologic pathology, neuropathology, liver and renal pathology among others.
What do we do?
Our size, patient population and unique experience enables us to provide services to UHN hospitals as well as hospitals and physicians across the GTA, Ontario and Canada.
Our team performs thousands of tests every year on body fluids, blood, biopsies and surgically removed tissues. The analyses utilize routine and highly sophisticated pathology tests such as immuno- histochemistry, in situ hybridization, molecular diagnostics, cytogenetics and flow cytometry. We also are called upon to perform autopsies when there is any uncertainty about the cause of death of a patient.
The tests we do may provide immediate results, but some of the specialized technologies require more time, sometimes a week or longer, to reach the most accurate diagnosis.
Our Academic Commitment
Along with providing world leading pathology testing and consulting services, our department is an academic leader. Our academic accomplishments in the last year include publishing hundreds of articles in major international journals, publishing books, teaching hundreds of students from the GTA, Canada and around the world and investing time and resources in research endeavours to further scientific discovery for patient care. Our medical and scientific staff holds professorial positions at the University of Toronto where we are charged with training medical doctors, pharmacists and other U of T students to provide excellent patient care.
Our Service Commitment
Our team is committed to providing leading edge pathology tests and services to physicians and nursing clients in the GTA, Ontario and Canada.
