Asthma and Airway Centre
Asthma Research
Our Involvement in Asthma Research
A group of asthma researchers at Toronto Western Hospital recognized a potential solution to the growing problem of poor asthma control. While patients with asthma participated in clinical trials to test new asthma medications, they often enjoyed marked improvements in their asthma. This was apparent even before they had taken any new medication or treatment. Asthma researchers recognized patients participating in clinical research were learning more about their asthma and were becoming more effective partners in its care. It was a short step from recognizing the benefits of this education to establishing the Centre in October 1989.
Asthma Research Studies
Even though we have effective treatment options to prevent and control asthma symptoms, there is no known cure for asthma. The Asthma and Airway Centre research staff participate in ongoing research activities for asthma and other respiratory diseases. Volunteers who participate in research studies are provided with medications and gain knowledge and a better understanding about their disease.

What you need to know for the study?
- To take part in a research study, you will need to visit the Asthma and Airway Centre at Toronto Western Hospital, 7th Floor, East Wing.
- The initial study visit will take about two hours. The two-hour time-frame is average for the first visit. It really depends on what is required for the study you are taking part in and the tests that are needed.
- During your visit, you will be given the study information/consent form to read and review with the study doctor, and his/her staff. We will review and explain all procedures to you at this time.
