Patient Safety is a priority and an integral component of the operational goals at UHN. Managing medications including administration is an essential part of the patient’s treatment and care.
The Safe Medication Practice Committee (SMPC) is comprised of interdisciplinary colleagues from the clinical practice areas of Nursing, Pharmacy, Human Factors, Risk Management, and Medicine, as well as ad hoc members. Each site, as well as the corporate team, meets regularly.
The focus is on patient safety surrounding best practices with the identification, preparation, storage, delivery, administration and documentation of medications. Quality and process improvements occur through incident reporting and monitoring of medication management.
The Safe Medication Practice Committee provides a venue where practice issues and quality improvements can be discussed and addressed. New issue resolutions and recommendations for the safe administration of medications to our patients at UHN can be implemented efficiently at each site.
