Education - eLearning

UHN is committed to providing nurses with timely access to educational opportunities and healthcare information. In 2005 UHN purchased and implemented a Learning Management System (LMS) to automate the processes associated with learning management administration, educational content development and program delivery. The LMS provides a centralized, web-based portal for registration, course and curriculum management, student transcripts, testing, as well as activity tracking and reporting.

The benefits of eLearning for our Nursing staff include:

  • 24/7 “just in time” access to educational information
  • Increased number and variety of educational offerings
  • Improved ability to track individual course registrations and/or course completion
  • Reduced scheduling restrictions associated with classroom training

eLearning Centre

To ensure that nurses across UHN have access to the latest information when and where they need it, nurses can participate in online learning through the eLearning Centre. Nurses simply log in to the Centre (on the Intranet) and, with a few clicks of the mouse they can launch a course, review policies and confirm that they understand the content, take a quiz or register for an instructor led class.

Some of the online courses that are currently available include:

  • Diabetes Management
  • Wound Care
  • Venipuncture
  • Focus Charting
  • Pain Management
  • Blood Transfusion Safety

TAHSN Collaboration

In 2005, UHN collaborated with several TAHSN member hospitals to further our common interest in eLearning. This undertaking has resulted in a collaboration between 8 downtown hospitals. Representatives from the hospitals meet quarterly to discuss issues such as content development processes, opportunities for sharing existing and new online courses, and joint purchases of off-the-shelf education materials.

An Essential Part of Staff Training

A few years ago UHN Nursing faced a turning point in how we approached staff based training. We were challenged with finding a way to manage our limited educator resources so we could provide training to more than 2500 nursing staff that worked shift work 24 hours a day, 7 days week. [more]
