healthcare professional checking a patient's skin

The Melanoma and Skin Oncology Site Group at Princess Margaret is internationally renowned for its excellence in research, education and clinical care. It is one of the largest inter-professional and multidisciplinary groups of its kind in Canada. Combining the expertise of our team with state-of the-art advanced technologies, we treat common, rare and complex skin and melanoma cancers.

Every year, our outpatient clinic has more than 10,000 patient visits, providing treatment options and patient care that considers the individual needs of each patient (patient-centred), with a special focus on patient education.

Our group works inter-professionally across medical disciplines and with psychosocial oncology, nurses and allied health professionals such as social workers, dietitians and physiotherapists.

Because our team includes medical, radiation and surgical oncologists, we have access to the latest technology and the most highly developed programs in radiation and surgical practice, including intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), gamma knife surgery and reconstructive and plastic surgery.

Pathology and Molecular Genetics is a large part of our personalized medicine approach.

Current clinical work is being conducted in:

  • Genetic mutations
    • B-RAF
    • N-RAS
    • C-KIT
  • NGS - Next generation sequencing - Bigger panel
  • FISH test for melanocytic lesions

Currently immunotherapy (anti-PD-1 and anti-PD-L1) are selectively used in the treatment and management of melanoma and some other complex skin cancers (i.e., basal cell cancer).

Clinical Practice Guidelines

Princess Margaret Cancer Centre clinical practice guidelines are developed by multidisciplinary teams and are reflective of current evidence-based practice. These clinical practice guidelines provide information to referring institutions, regional and global partners, and assist in decision-making processes of individuals comprising multidisciplinary care teams.
