ABOUT TELEHEALTH

Telehealth, also known as telemedicine, is the use of technology to provide health care and education for patients when a clinician and a patient are not located near each other.

At UHN, we use video-conferencing to connect patients across Ontario with clinicians at each of our hospitals (Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Rehab and Toronto Western Hospital). Our Telehealth program was established in 2002. More than 3,200 patients each year meet with our clinicians through telehealth appointments.

We offer telehealth services through a safe and secure connection provided by the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN).

The Benefits Of Telehealth

Telehealth offers many benefits:

Save on travel: Instead of traveling to one of our hospitals, you can meet with a clinician at UHN by visiting a telehealth site in your own community or a location that is closer to home.

There are more than 1,400 telehealth sites across Ontario, and these are often in hospitals, community health centres, family health team offices, and other community agencies. You can find the telehealth location that’s closest to you by calling our telehealth partner, OTN, at 1 866 454 6861.

A telehealth appointment saves you the time and costs that come with traveling long distances.

Get greater access to specialists: Along with your local clinicans, you can meet with a UHN specialist as part of your health care team, all within your own community.

See your family: If you are staying at a UHN hospital, you can use telehealth services to arrange a video-conference visit with your family members who live throughout the province.

Help the environment: Telehealth is also good for the environment. Cutting down on travel reduces greenhouse gas emissions from cars. For example, in 2010, by using telehealth appointments, we eliminated more than 750,000 km of travel and prevented more than 185,000 kg of greenhouse gas emissions.
