UHN's Heart Transplant Program began in 1985, and our first heart transplant was performed at Toronto Western Hospital. Since then, we have performed more than 600 heart transplants.
In 1997, we also began performing heart-lung transplants.
Each year, we perform about 20 to 30 heart transplants and implant about 20 to 30 mechanical hearts. We also support about 35 patients a year who have heart failure and are waiting for a transplant.
We are actively involved in quality-of-life research to try to better understand and improve life with a heart transplant.
We have the largest
advanced heart failure and transplant fellowship program in the world.
One organ and tissue donor can save up to 8 lives and improve life for up to 75 others.
