Neuroradiology Imaging

Main Page Content

The Neuroradiology Division provides diagnostic and interventional techniques related to disorders affecting the brain, head and neck, and spine regions. For this purpose, the division has access to the most modern diagnostic and therapeutic equipment which includes digital radiography units, 320 and 64 slice CT scanners, PET/CT, PET/MR, as well as 1.5T and 3T MRI scanners and two biplaner flat panel angiographic suites with hybrid OR and intraoperative MR capabilities.

UHN is a quaternary referral centre for the diagnosis and management of brain and spinal AVM, dural AV fistulae and vascular malformations of the brain, head and neck. The Toronto Western Hospital is designated one of three primary stroke centres in the Greater Toronto Area for acute stroke diagnosis and treatment. Our Neuroradiology team routinely performs stroke prevention techniques (extracranial and intracranial angioplasty and stenting).

Our Head and Neck Program is directly linked to the world-renowned cancer care program at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

Some specialized neuro procedures we provided include:

  • Modern Neuro-imaging techniques, such as Vessel Wall Imaging, four-dimensional CT Angiography as well as computational fluid dynamics and determination of shear stress forces, to determine the individual likelihood of rupture of vascular malformations or aneurysms
  • Cerebral Vascular Reactivity imaging in MRI – a technique that is used to assess impact of steno-occlusive disease of neck and brain vessels for endovascular and surgical revascularization
  • Minimally invasive procedures of the spine, including spinal biopsies, vertebral body augmentation, nerve and facet blocks
