Infection Prevention and Control Unit

Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) Unit is a corporate service for UHN's three hospitals. We monitor all patient floors and support service areas. Our mandate is to increase quality of patient care by identifying sources of infections and preventing their spread through surveillance, education and consultation.

Our Services

Education: We provide patients and staff with education regarding the risks of infectious diseases in the hospital and how to prevent the transmission of diseases in the hospital. We offer inservices on a wide range of topics from tuberculosis to body substance precautions help to train medical students, residents, fellows, and nursing students.

Advice: We provide other areas of the hospital with advice and insight on sterilization and disinfection of medical instruments, operating rooms, rational use of antibiotics, invasive medical devices, housekeeping, building design and construction-related issues.

Prevention: IPAC staff, in partnership with clinical staff, attempt to identify potentially infectious diseases promptly such that infections are not transmitted to others.

Surveillance: [link to performance measurement] IPAC tracks the prevalence and incidence of multi-drug resistant infections, central line-related infections, surgical wound infections and other serious infections to ensure that outbreaks are stopped quickly, should they appear.

Outbreak Management: When prevention fails and outbreaks occur, IPAC organizes the hospital’s response to ensure patient and staff safety, and to help the hospital get back to normal operations as quickly as possible

Research: IPAC is constantly involved in studies at the local, provincial and national level. By studying what we do, we strive to constantly improve our services.
