Transplant Pharmacy - Patient Toolbox

Filling Your Prescriptions

Before you go home you will receive prescriptions for all of your new transplant medications.  One of the advantages of the Toronto General Hospital is that we have our own Outpatient Pharmacy that carries all of the products and medications that are unique to the needs of our transplant patients.  If you choose to fill your initial prescriptions at our Outpatient Pharmacy, this will ensure that all of your medications will be available to your transplant pharmacist at the time they carry out your final discharge teaching.

In addition, the Ontario Ministry of Health has a Special Drugs Program that covers the costs of cyclosporine for transplant patients who are residents of Ontario.  If you are taking cyclosporine, this medication may be obtained free of charge from the Toronto General Hospital Outpatient Pharmacy.  If you do not live in the area, arrangements can be made for the medication to be sent out to you.  Please contact the staff at the Outpatient Pharmacy at 416-340-4075 for further details.

Transplant medications are very expensive and can range from $200 to over $3000 for a one month supply.  Because of this many retail pharmacies do not carry this medication on their shelves on a regular basis.  If you plan to obtain your transplant medications at a pharmacy outside of Toronto General Hospital, it is important to give them at least one week’s notice so that these medications can be ordered in for you.
