Research

Our research team is funded by the Vision Science Research Program (VSRP) and based at the Toronto Western Hospital. Through basic and clinical research we have made many advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions and diseases, such as the rare childhood cancer of the eye known as retinoblastoma. Our ophthalmology residents and our fellows also conduct research in the areas of vitroretinal surgery, glaucoma and corneal surgery. Through VSRP, our research focuses on:

  • Molecular genetics of blinding eye diseases and brain disorders
  • Treatment, biophysics and psychophysics of glaucoma
  • Eye movement control mechanisms
  • Neuronal damage
  • Retinal degeneration and diabetic retinopathy
