Neuro-ophthalmology is a subspecialty of both neurology and ophthalmology dealing with brain disorders that affect vision. This field covers a wide variety of conditions as five of the 12 cranial nerves in the central nervous system are associated with vision.
Neuro-ophthalmologists have specialized training and expertise in the problems of the eye, brain, nerves and muscles. Our staff treats patients for problems that affect the optic nerve and pathways that carry vision signals to the brain. There are also nerve diseases that can compromise vision by affecting the tissues that surround and support the eye.
Some of the symptoms of neuro-ophthalmologic conditions include:
- Blindness
- blurred vision
- double vision
- asymmetrical pupils
- eyelid or facial contractures
- eye or head pain
- unexplained vision loss
