Regional Anesthesia & Pain Management (RAPM)
Patient Information
What is Acute Pain Service?
The Acute Pain Service (APS) team includes an anesthesiologist and an
Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) who has specialized training in pain
management.
The Acute Pain Service staff will be involved in your care if you require a patient controlled analgesia (PCA) device, an epidural, or a peripheral nerve plexus catheter. We will be asked to help:
- If you have severe or uncontrolled pain after your operation
- If you had difficult to manage chronic pain before your operation.
Our goal is to reduce the amount of pain that you experience:
- So it does not interfere with your ability to rest, sleep, eat, move, deep breathe and cough.
- To help you with your physiotherapy and complete rehabilitation after your operation.
We will help you to manage your pain until your pain can be controlled by oral medications. We will be happy to visit with you if your pain gets out of control at any time.
When you leave the hospital, we might be able to see you as an outpatient if you have special needs.
