The Radiation Safety Office aims to build relationships of empowerment and to seamlessly create professional services while maintaining the highest standards. We are committed to continually raise safety awareness, improve radiation safety standards, participate in decision-making and consultation, provide timely and effective responses, and to create and sustain an environment inspiring trust, integrity, collaboration and personal responsibility.

Radiation Safety is part of Facilities Management. The Corporate Radiation Safety Office provides oversight and support to all areas at UHN that use radioactive materials. This includes 75 labs, 2 Nuclear Medicine departments, 2 Nuclear Cardiology departments, a Radiopharmacy, Brachytherapy, Radiation Therapy and several miscellaneous facilities. Support is provided by Radiation Safety Officers who have been assigned areas of responsibility.

There is a corporate office located in Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at Toronto General Hospital and sattelite sites at Princess Margaret Hospital and Toronto Western Hospital. There is always a staff member available by pager to deal with emergency issues. This number can be reached by listening to the message at central information. What we do

• Liaise with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) to ensure federal guidelines are met
• Develop policies and procedures
• Assess the radiation safety of clinical trials
• Issue dosimeters and review results
• Provide training and education to all staff who have casual contact with radioactive materials and staff who work with radioactive materials
• Organize radioactive waste removal
• Provide and maintain lab/departmental permits
• Perform routine inspections in all areas where radioactive materials are used
• Provide support for the decommissioning of radioactive areas and equipment
• Receive and deliver radioactive materials
• Calibrate contamination meters
• Assess facility shielding and design
• Perform safety assessments of all new and existing work
• Address UHN staff concerns
