Nursing
Nursing staff is on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The nurses carry out an initial health assessment and assist patients in managing the side effects of treatment. The nurses provide education and offer support/information groups for a variety of different cancers. The nurses can offer complimentary therapies such as Therapeutic Touch, Reflexology, Healing Touch and Reiki.
Nutrition
The nutrition team works hard to ensure that you have a healthy, happy stay and hopes that you will enjoy your meals. During the weekdays, the Lodge provides three meals a day, cafeteria style to all residents and their guests. A limited service is available on weekends. The Lodge provides kitchenettes on each floor for residents' use. Special dietary needs and restrictions should be brought to the attention of the nursing staff.
Transportation
The Princess Margaret Lodge shuttle bus goes from the Lodge to both the Princess Margaret Hospital and the Toronto Sunnybrook Regional Cancer Centre during clinic hours. A copy of the schedule will be provided upon your arrival. There is a space for patient drop off and pickup; however, there are no parking facilities at the Lodge. There are public parking lots in the area.
Other Services
- telephones with a voice mail system are provided in each room
- televisions are available in the lounges on each floor
- two computers with Internet access are available for your use in the Resource Room
- coin operated laundry facilities are available on-site
Programs and Services Provided by the Volunteers of the Canadian Cancer Society
Wig Boutique
Wigs, turbans and creative hairpieces are free to patients who need them as a result of hair loss from cancer treatments. To arrange an appointment with a volunteer, please call (416) 413-7412.
Social Activities
Canadian Cancer Society arranges various social activities such as movies, karaoke, games and craft activities. Seasonal parties and social events are organized. All programs rely on the availability of the volunteers.
Things to Bring with You
- identification (hospital card, insurance card, ID) and appointment cards.
- all of your medications
- personal care items such as hygiene products, razors, deodorant, tissues, sanitary supplies, hair dryer
- bed linens, blankets and pillows are provided and changed weekly. You may wish to bring your own towels to supplement
- loose, comfortable clothing and shoes for indoor wear
