Once hired, the hospital’s general Nursing Orientation runs over a two-week period. The first day is consists of information to new employees of the organization presented by Human Resources, Infection Control, Security Services, Fire Safety etc.The rest of the first week are sessions around skills required with hands on demonstrations of equipment used at UHN on the nursing units. Time is also spent learning the computer system at UHN, as well as an afternoon on the new hires nursing unit.
The second week is a continuation of week 1 around information required, skills and hands on. Day 2 is spent at a “site based orientation” for new hires coming to the GD, focusing on documentation, charting, and common conditions of patients.
The last 2 days consists of more computer training and time on the hired units with the new hires assigned preceptor.
Once the general two-week orientation is completed, the new hire is given a schedule on their unit where they are buddied with a preceptor for the next two weeks learning the routines etc. on the unit. They work both days/nights during this time period.
During the unit’s orientation period, the goal is to have the new hire complete their required skills necessary to have while working on the unit such as venipuncture and inserting I/V’s. The hospital’s probation period is 3 months and it is during this time that the new hire is encouraged to learn as much as they can, focusing on the unit’s practices.
In-services are provided routinely on the nursing unit with every opportunity for the nurses to attend. This also includes sessions offered to employees by the Human Resources Department and anyone can attend provided they have discussed this with their NM.
There are numerous learning opportunity’s ongoing throughout the organization that all nursing employees can attend. The information memo’s are clearly posted by all elevators and are often open to all who are interested.
