Allergic Rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis is swelling and inflammation of the nasal passages triggered by exposure to something to which you have an allergy. Common symptoms include nasal congestion, itchy nose, sneezing, runny nose and itchy eyes. Allergic rhinitis is a common condition and can be a nuisance to many; however, practicing preventive measures is helpful when you know what triggers it. Allergic rhinitis can be seasonal with symptoms occurring at certain times of the year (i.e.: tree pollen from mid-April to early June, grass pollen from early May to the end of July and ragweed pollen from August to October). Symptoms occurring throughout the year may be due to dust mites, moulds or household pets. An allergy skin test is useful to identify these.

Your doctor may recommend antihistamines, nasal spays or nasal drops to treat this problem. Proper inhalation technique is necessary for nasal sprays or drops to achieve the full effect of the medication. Inhaler devices can vary depending on the type of spray prescribed, so follow the directions which come with your inhaler. The following are general guidelines in using nasal sprays and nasal drops. Be very careful when using non-prescription decongestant sprays (i.e.: Otrivin, Dristan). Long-term, regular use can lead to "rebound" problems like worsening nasal congestion when you attempt to discontinue the medication. This is not a problem with prescription sprays.

How To Use Your Nasal Spray

  1. Blow your nose gently to clear secretions from nostrils.
  2. Shake the inhaler well.
  3. Keep head forward.
  4. Close one nostril by pressing finger towards bridge of nose.
  5. Hold tip of spray at edge of nose.
  6. Start inhaling, depressing the canister at the same time (hold breath for a couple of seconds)
  7. Repeat steps two to six for the other nostril or additional puffs.

Cleaning Instructions:
Remove the canister and wash plastic parts regularly in warm water or mild detergent. Dry well before replacing canister.

How to Use Nose Drops

  1. Blow your nose gently to clear excess secretions from nostrils.
  2. Lie down for best results, tilt head backwards.
  3. Place a drop in each nostril or as directed.
  4. Remain in this position for two to four minutes turning head sideways and breath in through mouth.
  5. Clear the dropper and replace in bottle.

Cleaning instructions:
Follow directions that come with your nose drops.

Note: If you are prescribed a different type of nasal inhaler, please follow the directions that come with it.
