Perspectives on Suicide
Suicide is closely tied to the presence of psychiatric illness such as depression.  However, suicide is caused by multiple factors rather than a single issue or event.  As a result, suicide prevention calls for a broadly based and comprehensive plan.

Borderline Personality Disorder
Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder suffer from poorly regulated moods, impulsive behavior and disturbed relationships.  Suicidal behavior and suicide are a significant risk for individuals with borderline personality disorder.  Although this disorder is often considered difficult to treat, now four or five psychotherapy approaches have been shown to be helpful.
