Although mood disorders can emerge at any time, women are more likely to experience anxiety, depression or psychoses around times of hormonal changes such as pre-menstrually, during pregnancy, post-partum or during menopause.

The Women's Mental Health Program at the University Health Network provides expert assessment and treatment of mental disorders that are associated with all aspects of the reproductive cycle. Treatment is supported by an active research program that focuses on depression in women pre- and post-menopause. In addition, this program also concentrates on issues related to violence against women including the assessment and treatment of victims of sexual abuse, sexual assault, domestic abuse, stalking, sexual harassment and abuse by authority figures.

Finally, these treatment efforts are complemented by educational outreach that aims to increase awareness among women and healthcare professionals about disorders that commonly affect women in order to enhance prevention, early detection and treatment of these disorders. Treatment modalities include insight or intrapersonal psychotherapy, group therapy and medication.
