Dr. Susan Abbey,
Head, Medical and Surgical Psychiatry

When a patient’s illness impinges on his mental health, or when a psychiatric condition influences a patient’s ability to recover from a physical illness, a psychiatrist is called in to consult and advise on treatment options.

The Medical and Surgical Psychiatry program provides psychiatric and psychosocial care at the Toronto General and Toronto Western Hospitals to patients with medical and surgically related conditions who are also experiencing some psychiatric or psychological symptoms. It includes a medical psychiatry outpatient assessment and treatment clinic to provide treatment options and a mindfulness-based stress reduction clinic that concentrates on teaching certain strategies to deal with stress.
