A geriatric psychiatrist is a doctor who specializes in the mental and emotional problems experience by older adults. These problems could relate to anxiety, depression, memory loss, dementia and schizophrenia. Sometimes these problems occur as a result of a physical problem such as stroke, hypertension, diabetes or chronic pain, but in many instances there does not seem to be any single event for the problem
The Geriatric Psychiatry Program at University Health Network is part of a conjoint program in geriatric psychiatry that also includes services at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute (TRI).
There are four components to the program:
| • | Mood Disorders Module -includes 5 inpatient beds and an outpatient clinic for late-life affective disorders at Toronto General Hospital. |
| • | Dementia/Memory Module - includes a 20-bed inpatient unit at TRI, specializing in the behavioural and functional rehabilitation of older people with dementia; a Memory Clinic at UHN, and a satellite memory clinic at Whitby Psychiatric Hospital. |
| • | Hospital Consultation Liaison Module - which provides service to the medical and surgical wards at UHN and TRI, involves the assessment and management of psychiatric disorders in the medically ill elderly. |
| • | Psychogeriatric Outreach Team - provides mental health consultation and treatment to older |
