The terms in this glossary were derived from the medical glossary of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health and are used with the Centre's permission

Incongruous affect – an inappropriate display of emotion, for instance, laughing when talking about sad events.
Insomnia – An inability to sleep, or sleep that is prematurely ended or interrupted by periods of wakefulness. A symptom of some anxiety and mood disorders.
Interpersonal therapy (IPT) – A psychotherapy that is based on the concept that depressive symptoms occur within the context of disturbed relationships. IPT helps patients understand their feelings and how their personal problems and conflicts relate to their depression.
Involuntary admission – An admission to hospital that takes place without the individual’s consent.
