Volunteering at UHN
Volunteer Profiles

1. Can I volunteer at more than one UHN hospital at the same time?
Yes. Since it is one organization, we would encourage you to volunteer at more than one site at the same time, as long as long as you can regularly commit to a 3-4 hour shift at each hospital during the week.
2. Can I choose my volunteer placement?
Your volunteer placement is decided at the Placement Meeting. A Program Coordinator will assign a volunteer role based on availability and your interests
3. How many times a week do I need to volunteer?
You must volunteer for a minimum of one 4 hours shift each week
4. I am a high school student. Can I just do my required of community service hours?
No. The minimum program requirement for volunteering at UHN is 140 hours. Even if you have completed your 40 hours of community service for high school, you are required to successfully complete our program. We can only accept you if you are prepared to meet our program requirements.
5. Will volunteering lead to employment at UHN?
UHN’s Volunteer Resources Department is responsible for providing our hospitals with volunteer services and has no authority to offer employment. Volunteering MAY provide experience or exposure that will help you find a job at UHN or elsewhere but volunteering DOES NOT guarantee you will be offered a job at UHN, nor will you be considered an internal application at UHN.
6. Can I volunteer evening and weekends?
Yes. Though limited, some evening and weekend positions are available at Toronto Western Hospital and Toronto General Hospital
7. I have received professional training (e.g. nurse, physician, physical therapy, counselor) may I practice that as a volunteer?
No. While we welcome volunteers with health care backgrounds, volunteers are not permitted to ac as professional health care providers in the hospital. All volunteers must work within the scope of the duties assigned to them.
8. I have no e-mail or Internet access. How can I become a volunteer at UHN?
In those circumstances, which we hope are becoming increasingly rare, you can attend an info session and speak with us directly.
