Cheryl Kanter, MSW
Social Worker
Cheryl Kanter studied and trained in New York, where she received her Masters Degree in Social Work. Realizing that social workers play an important role in cancer care, Cheryl returned to Toronto in November 2001 to join Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH). Shortly thereafter, she took the position of designated Social Worker at The Gerry & Nancy Brain Tumor Centre, where she works closely with patients and families, helping them deal with the diagnosis of brain cancer.
Learning that you have cancer can be a terrifying experience for patients and their loved ones, says Cheryl, and the role of the social worker is to assist families through diagnosis, treatment, and after-care by providing them with emotional support and helping them access community resources. She encourages patients and their families to meet with her when financial, social, or emotional difficulties arise. Cheryl also co-facilitates the Caregiver Support Group, and works with families to improve communication between family members following a diagnosis of cancer. Prior to joining The Pencer Centre and PMH, Cheryl worked with adults, children and families in a variety of treatment settings, providing psychotherapy, resource counseling, and psychoeducational support group counseling.
