Fellowship Application

The Glaucoma Service at the Toronto Western Hospital is one of Canada's foremost Clinical Research Departments. Drs. Yvonne Buys and Graham Trope are internationally renowned glaucoma specialists who have published widely in all aspects of this disease.

The Glaucoma Service at the Toronto Western Hospital treats over 5000 patients per year. We have a state-of-the-art technical department, which includes the latest technology in optic nerve imaging and visual fields. Our department has specialized expertise in the area of laser treatments of glaucoma and surgical aspects of glaucoma, including the use of glaucoma drainage devices such as the Ahmed valve.

The service provides training for medical students, residents and fellows. Surgeons from all over the world, as well as a number of specialists in Canada, have trained with Drs. Trope and Buys. Drs. Trope and Buys have the longest running glaucoma Fellowship program in Canada. To-date, over 20 fellows from all continents and from countries as far away as Saudi Arabia and Australia have received glaucoma training at UHN. Clinical students, elective students, summer students and fellows are invited to work in the Glaucoma Service at the Toronto Western Hospital.

This department is significantly involved in basic science and clinical research in conjunction with Dr. John Flanagan, Senior Scientist - Vision Science Research Program. The Glaucoma Service is also involved in peer-reviewed funded research.
