Cornea and External Ocular Disease Service
The Cornea and External Ocular Disease Service at University Health Network has been operational for the past two decades, offering state of the art diagnostic and therapeutic services to patients locally, nationally and internationally. Referrals are for tertiary and quaternary medical and surgical problems.

Services

  • corneal transplantations
  • anterior segment reconstruction
  • treatment of corneal ulcers and perforations
  • management of corneal and conjunctival tumours
  • complex cataracts

The service consists of two full time corneal specialists and two part-time members. We are the largest corneal referral center in Canada, performing approximately 400 corneal transplants per year, one third of those done in Ontario. The service is an active site of the Endothelial Keratoplasty study group, an international study group devoted to development and improvement of a newer technique in corneal transplantation.

Drs. Rootman and Slomovic run the largest corneal fellowship training program in Canada, training 2 to 4 research and clinical fellows every year. Ophthalmologists from countries including Canada, USA, Great Britain, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Israel, Thailand and the Philippines have been trained in advanced cornea at UHN. Dr. Slomovic is also the ophthalmic consultant for the only multi-disciplinary Sjogren's Syndrome clinic in Canada. Each year, several scientific papers are published as a result of the work done by the corneal service.

Mission Statement
