Arthritis Treatment News| Health Information

At UHN, arthritis falls under the Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis Program grouping. Arthritis and related disorders include various rheumatic diseases causing joint and musculoskeletal pain. There is a wide range of disorders and symptoms encompassed by this grouping, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Sjogren’s syndrome, polymyositis, vasculitis, scleroderma, gout, fibromyalgia, back pain and regional pain disorders.

UHN’s Arthritis and Related Disorders Care Area
The Arthritis and Related Disorders Program is the largest of its kind in Canada. Our faculty of 11 rheumatologists works with a multidisciplinary team made up of nurses, a physiotherapist, occupational therapist, pharmacist, dietitian and social worker.

Our team provides diagnosis and multidisciplinary management to patients in several clinics, including:

  • General clinics
  • Specialty rheumatology clinics:
    • systemic lupus erythematosus
    • psoriatic arthritis
    • antiphospholipid antibody syndrome
    • Sjogren’s syndrome
    • ankylosing spondylitis
    • reactive arthritis
  • Weekly clinic for urgent referrals that need to be seen within a maximum of two weeks

In addition, our in-patient unit provides multidisciplinary care to patients from across Ontario with complex and often life-threatening rheumatic diseases.

Specialized care and state-of-the-art prevention strategies
Our care area is home to the Centre for Prognosis Studies in the Rheumatic Diseases. The centre is internationally known for its expertise and contributions in the field of systemic lupus erythematosus and psoriatic arthritis. Over the past 25 years, thousands of patients with these conditions have been followed on a regular basis by the physicians in the centre and benefit from state-of-the-art specialized care and prevention.

Helping to lead the way in lupus research and treatment, UHN is also the coordinating centre for the Canadian Network for Improved Outcome in System Lupus Erythematosus (CaNIOS). This network is collaborating to learn more about lupus and how to improve the quality of life of those affected with the disease across Canada.

Our care area functions as the core site for rheumatology training not only in Toronto, but also in Canada. It is the flagship program of the National Network of Rheumatic Disease Units. With eight clinical fellows and three research fellows in the program, it is the largest rheumatology training program in the country.
