Osteoporosis is a serious disease characterized by low bone mass. Loss of bone mass can occur for many years without signs or symptoms, causing weaker bones and an increased risk of fractures. If left untreated, osteoporosis can lead to broken bones, constant pain and spinal deformity.
It is estimated that 1.4 million Canadians suffer from osteoporosis and one in six women and one in 16 men over the age 50 suffer from the disease.
The Osteoporosis and Bone Density Care Area at UHN
In a joint program with Mount Sinai Hospital, our osteoporosis program provides excellent care for patients with osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases, as well as up-to-date information on the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.
The Osteoporosis and Bone Density care area includes:
- A Bone Density Lab equipped with a DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) machine used to measure bone mineral density
- The Osteoporosis Clinic, specializing in
