Krembil Neuroscience Program

Spinal

What is the spine?
The spine not only allows us to stand up and walk, but it also carries important messages between the brain and the rest of the body. Injury to the spinal cord can result in both sensory and motor disabilities, affecting a person’s ability to move and control muscles and affecting the function of organs such as the bladder.

Spinal cord injuries cause interruptions in message systems from the brain to the rest of the body. These injuries can be the result of accidents or conditions which damage the spinal cord.

UHN’s spinal care area
Part of the Krembil Neuroscience Centre, the spinal care area is a University Health Network Centre of Excellence. Our team includes internationally recognized health professionals and scientists who continuously strive for new ways to treat spinal disorders and spinal injuries.

The spinal care area encompasses a wide variety of services and practices:

  • Surgical Intervention
  • Acute Care Patient Management
  • Patient Education
  • Spinal Cord Registry
  • Imaging
  • Pre-clinical Pharmaceutical Trials
  • Pathophysiology of Spinal Cord Injury
  • Spinal Cord Regeneration
  • Tissue Banking
  • Clinical Trials

Our research - both basic and clinical - is aimed at bringing research findings from the bench to the bedside. We use innovative techniques to understand the molecular and cellular basis of spinal cord injury and to develop new strategies for repair and regeneration.
