What does neurovascular health involve?
Neurovascular health involves the brain, spinal cord and blood vessels. Disorders and conditions of the neurovascular system include brain or blood vessel aneurysms, stroke syndromes or vascular malformations of the brain and spinal cord.
Depending on the individual patient’s case and the condition involved, treatment for neurovascular conditions may include medication, surgery, embolization or radiation.
UHN’s neurovascular care area
Our neurovascular care area is a world-class centre for the treatment of strokes, aneurysms and other neurovascular conditions. Our team includes neurosurgeons, neurologists, interventional neuroradiologists, acute care practitioners and other health-care professionals.
Depending on what kind of disorder a patient has and how serious it is, patients will be seen by the following programs:
Acute Stroke Program - emergency care within the first few hours of a stroke, using rapid-diagnosis imaging facilities
Stroke Prevention Clinic - referral for evaluation, investigation and risk reduction of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA)
Arterial Venous Malformation and Aneurysm Clinics - assessment of aneurysm patients by an expert team of neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists and radiation specialists
Interventional Neuroradiology Program - treatment for tumor, arteriovenous malformation (AVM) and stroke
A recognized leader in neurovascular care
Based at Toronto Western Hospital, our care area is a part of the Krembil Neuroscience Centre, the largest combined clinical and research neurological science facility in Canada. Designated as a Regional Stroke Centre, our program provides leadership to the province in best practices for stroke care, from prevention to acute care to rehabilitation and home care.
Our neurovascular care area is also the flagship for the Registry of the Canadian Stroke Network, which collects information about the care and treatment of patients during and after a stroke. We also participate in the Telestroke program, using video-conference technology to provide consultation to two northern hospitals through the North Network.
Research and clinical trials are helping us better understand neurovascular conditions and improve stroke prevention and treatment. Our physicians are leading the way in many international stroke-related research projects and conferences; in fact, our techniques attract visiting physicians from around the globe, who come to learn the newest treatments, such as 3D neuroangiography and “stroke busting” techniques.
