Neuro-Urology

What is neuro-urology?
Neuro-urology focuses on disorders or conditions of the bladder, urinary tract, kidneys and genitalia related to neurological disorders and spinal injuries. For example, patients with neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis may experience problems such as overactive bladder or sexual dysfunction. Neuro-urology involves diagnosing the source of the condition or problem and treating it through surgery, medication, or behavioral changes.

UHN’s Neuro-Urology Care Area
UHN’s neuro-urology care area is one of the most advanced centres of its kind in Canada. Our team of urologists and nurses specializes in helping more than 1,000 patients each year with neuro-urology disorders. We diagnose and effectively treat conditions and symptoms including incontinence, voiding dysfunction and sexual dysfunction.

With one of the most sophisticated bladder testing units in the country, we can diagnose even the most complex urology disorders. Renowned for our advanced technology and expertise, other urologists from across the province refer patients to our centre. Post-graduate fellows from around the world visit to learn more about the latest in neuro-urology diagnosis and treatment.

Leading the way with research and technology
Our physicians are also award-winning researchers, devoted to the better understanding of bladder problems and improving our patients’ quality of life. Our care area is at the leading edge of technology, including neurostimulation technology that works like a pacemaker to regulate bladder control. Research in our laboratories and clinical research with our patients continues to advance neuro-urology treatment and technology for the benefit of our patients.
