What does neuromuscular health involve?
Neuromuscular health involves how nerves and muscles work together, allowing us to move, speak and perform other physical activities. Neuromuscular disorders like myasthenia gravis can cause weakness or make it difficult to control movements.
UHN’s Neuromuscular Care Area
Our neuromuscular care area specializes in caring for patients with complex disorders — in fact, we’re home to the largest program in Canada for patients with myasthenia gravis.
Patients are referred to our care area from across Ontario and Canada. We see approximately 3,500 patients each year in our clinic and perform 1600 procedures, such as single-fibre electromyography (EMG) and quantitative EMG tests. For these procedures, we use state-of-the-art electrodiagnostic equipment.
Research and education help us improve neuromuscular treatments and ensure our high quality of treatment continues with the next generation of health-care professionals. We provide teaching at the postgraduate and undergraduate levels and our research is focused on new treatments for patients with the following disorders:
- Diabetic neuropathy
- Inflammatory demyelinateing ployneurpathy (acute and chronic)
- Myasthenia gravis
