What are neural and sensory systems?
Neural and sensory systems control how the brain sends and receives messages to other parts of the body, such as muscles, blood vessels and glands. These systems allow us to do everyday things such as breathe, walk, talk, reason, think, see and swallow.
Injuries to the nervous system, such as spinal cord injury or stroke or diseases like Epilepsy and Alzheimer's can cause breakdowns in neural and sensory systems. These breakdowns stop messages from being properly sent and received. Without these messages to guide movement and other activities, even ordinary tasks can become difficult or impossible to complete.
UHN's Krembil Neuroscience Program
Our neuroscience program offers outstanding care in all neuroscience medical specialties (neurology, neurosurgery, neuropathology, neuroradiology and neuropsychiatry). We're internationally renowned for our programs in spinal cord injury, complex spinal surgery, stroke and neurovascular disorders, neurodegenerative problems, neuro-oncology and epilepsy.
UHN is also home to Canada's premier ophthalmic and visual science department and the country's only formal multidisciplinary neuro-otology program. We are one of only two sites in Ontario that provide complete neuro-urology services.
